All
I Want For Christmas Is You
1994
Mariah
Carey
In 1994, a very very lovely lady with a very very
lovely voice recorded a little Christmas tune that was to become the
most popular new Christmas song to be released since 1963.
That Lovely young lady, of course, was the legendary
Mariah Carey, and that little tune was 'All I Want For Christmas Is
You'.
'All I Want For Christmas Is You' was the lead single on
her 1994 Christmas album 'Merry Christmas'. Like 'Last Christmas',
hard as it is to be believed, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'
wasn't released as a single when the album came out. It was actually
used to drive sales of the album, and received tremendous airplay, to
the point of becoming the 12th most played song of the
year (Not just Christmas songs...songs in general) that first year.
When it finally was released as a single, in 2000, it cracked the top
100 by a mere 17 spots, but don't let that fool ya. By then it had
cleaned up the charts across The Pond a couple of times over, and
over here, it had become so well loved that it was a hit everywhere
but the scoreboard.
When the song was released it got rave reviews from just
about everyone. All facets of it...musically, lyrically, and Mariah
Carey's performance of it...deservedly so. When the song starts up it
sort of fools you with that slow, mellow tempo and those soft
soothing vocals, then about fifty seconds in, Mariah and company kick
in the afterburners and reveal the songs true personality...it rocks
your Yuletide world in a really good way. It's a dance tune,
and that's exactly what you want to do when you hear it. At a desk or
in your car? Fingers will be snapped, toes tapped, and steering
wheels finger-tapped to the beat. Try listening to this song and not
moving something to the beat. I dare ya ;)
All I Want For Christmas is You is another one that has
been covered by everyone, with heavy emphasis n the younger
performers. It'll be around forever, and that's a really good thing.
So Enjoy! Mariah Carey's little Christmas tune that
became an overnight classic! All I Want For Christmas Is You!
In the video. Mariah Carey used actual home movie
Christmas footage from a couple of years earlier...I love the way the
scene used during the transition form slow to dance music is her
coming down hill...fast...on a toboggan.
Country Pop group Lady Antebellum released their cover
of 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' in 2010...they went down-tempo
just a bit on their version, and gave it their signature sound for a
very lovely version that's, very deservedly, seen it's own share of
radio airplay.
To prove the guys can do it as well as the gals, Michael
Buble' also covered 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' with his own
arrangement, and signature sound.
The cast of 'Glee' rocked out Mariah Carey's Christmas
Classic, and released it with their album of Christmas music. They
nailed it Bigtime'...the 'Glee' cast has shown how talented
they are many times over since the show premiered.
Lovely Disney Starlet Caroline Sunshine (And yes, that
is her real name) covered 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' in
2012, and nailed it to the wall. This version really surprised
me to be honest...Caroline has some serious pipes!
